Retraction and Correction

Retraction and Correction

Arba: Jurnal Studi Keislaman is committed to maintaining the integrity, reliability, and completeness of the scientific record through responsible publication ethics policies.

We acknowledge that the authors have worked diligently and responsibly in preparing the manuscripts and that every published manuscript has undergone a thorough peer review process. However, under certain circumstances, a published article may need to be retracted or deleted for scientific or ethical reasons. This action cannot be taken arbitrarily and is only permitted in exceptional circumstances. Therefore, any correction, clarification, retraction, or apology—if necessary—will be carried out according to strict standards to maintain trust in the authority and integrity of the journal's electronic archives. Our commitment and policies are oriented towards maintaining the integrity and completeness of the scientific record, which is of vital value to researchers, academics, and librarians.

Article Retraction

Arba: Jurnal Studi Keislaman is committed to playing an active role in maintaining the integrity of the scientific record. To that end, under certain circumstances, article retraction may be necessary. An article may be retracted if it meets one or more of the following criteria:

  1. Significant scientific misconduct invalidates the article's main conclusions, for example, if there is clear evidence that the research findings are unreliable, either due to a breach of research ethics (such as data falsification) or due to unintentional errors (such as miscalculation or experimental error).
  2. The research findings have been previously published elsewhere without adequate cross-referencing, permission, or justification (this constitutes redundant publication).
  1. There are violations of publication ethics, such as plagiarism—the taking of another's ideas, processes, results, or words without proper attribution, including material obtained through confidential peer-review processes—or authorship issues that do not meet academic standards.

To ensure that publication retractions are conducted in accordance with best practices in scientific publishing and in line with the COPE Publication Retraction Guidelines, Arba: Jurnal Studi Keislaman implements the following procedures:

  1. Articles that are potentially eligible for retraction are reported and submitted to the journal Editor.
  2. Journal editors are required to follow the step-by-step guidelines outlined in the COPE flowchart, including evaluating responses and clarifications provided by the authors of the relevant articles.
  3. Before any decision is made, the Editor's findings and recommendations are communicated to the Ethics Advisory Board. This step aims to ensure consistent case handling in accordance with best practices in the scientific publishing industry.
  1. The final decision regarding article retraction is then communicated to the authors and—if deemed necessary—to other relevant parties, such as the authors' affiliated institutions.
  2. The retraction statement is officially published online and published in the next available issue of the journal.

It should be emphasized that the author's ownership of copyright does not automatically grant the right to retract an article after publication. The integrity of the published scientific record remains a key principle, and the COPE Retraction Guidelines apply in all relevant cases.

Article Corrections

Arba: Jurnal Studi Keislaman considers publishing corrections when:

  1. A small portion of a generally reliable publication contains erroneous or misleading data, especially if the error is unintentional.
  1. Information about authors or contributors is inaccurate, for example, if an author who should have been listed is omitted, or an individual who does not meet the authorship criteria is listed as an author.

Corrections to articles that have undergone peer review are classified into the following three categories:

  1. Publisher's correction (erratum): issued to notify readers of a significant error originating from the publisher or journal—usually a production error—that negatively impacts the publication record, the scientific integrity of the article, or the reputation of the authors or the journal.
  1. Author's correction (corrigendum): issued to notify readers of a significant error made by the authors that impacts the publication record, the scientific integrity of the article, or the reputation of the authors or the journal.
  2. Addendum: an addendum prepared by the author to explain discrepancies, expand the discussion, or clarify and update information contained in the primary work.

The decision regarding the need to publish a correction and the appropriate type of correction rests solely with the journal editor, sometimes taking into account input from reviewers or members of the editorial board. The editor-in-charge will contact the authors of the articles for clarification, but the final decision rests with the editor.

Article Removal

Under very limited circumstances, a published article may be removed from a journal's online platform. This action will only be taken if the article is clearly defamatory, violates the legal rights of others, is potentially subject to a court order, or if the article's content—if acted upon—could pose a serious health risk. In these circumstances, the article's metadata (such as title and author information) will remain as part of the scientific record, while the full text of the article will be replaced with a notice stating that the article has been removed for legal reasons.

Article Replacement

In certain cases, where a published article poses a potential serious health risk, the author may request a retraction of the offending article and a replacement with a corrected version. In these situations, the article retraction procedure still follows the provisions outlined above, with the difference that the retraction statement will include a link to the corrected and republished version of the article, along with a history of changes to the document.
