Theme: Islam and Pluralism: Theology, Coexistence, and Interreligious Relations

Religious plurality is a fundamental reality of contemporary life. Diversity of belief presents not only social challenges but also raises fundamental questions within Islamic studies regarding how Islam perceives the existence of other religions, the boundaries of belief, relationships between people of different faiths, and the possibility of fostering coexistence in a pluralistic society. In this context, pluralism is understood not merely as a matter of social tolerance but as a theological, philosophical, hermeneutic, and epistemological issue closely linked to Islamic understandings of God, humanity, revelation, salvation, diversity, and coexistence.

Al-Qarawiyyin: Jurnal Ilmu Ushuluddin invites academics, researchers, and intellectuals to submit scholarly articles examining Islam and pluralism from the perspective of Ushuluddin. This theme aims to bridge the Islamic intellectual tradition with the dynamics of interreligious relations in contemporary society, while maintaining theology, tafsir, hadith, Islamic philosophy, and Islamic thought as the primary foundations of analysis. Studies may explore how Islamic sources and intellectual traditions interpret religious diversity and how these conceptual frameworks interact with the challenges of coexistence in pluralistic societies.

The scope of the study includes, but is not limited to: Islamic theology and religious pluralism; the concept of diversity in the Qur’an; hadith and interreligious relations; tafsir regarding religious plurality; the theology of salvation and other religions; concepts of the human being and humanity in Islam; religious freedom from an Islamic theological perspective; tolerance and interreligious coexistence; interfaith dialogue from the perspective of Islamic thought; Islamic philosophy and religious plurality; the epistemology of knowledge regarding other religions; the construction of religious identity; and the relationship between faith and coexistence; the thought of classical and contemporary scholars regarding pluralism; the reinterpretation of religious texts within the context of pluralistic societies; and the evolution of Islamic thought concerning interfaith relations in the contemporary era.

This theme also opens avenues for comparative and interdisciplinary research, provided the core analysis remains grounded in the discipline of Ushuluddin—specifically kalam (theology), tafsir (exegesis), hadith, Islamic philosophy, and Islamic thought. Articles are expected to go beyond normative discussions on the importance of tolerance and instead offer critical analyses of concepts, arguments, the evolution of thought, textual interpretations, and the intellectual dynamics of Islam in responding to religious plurality. Historical, hermeneutic, philosophical, theological, and comparative approaches—as well as studies of intellectual history—may be employed, provided they are relevant to the research focus.

Through this theme, Al-Qarawiyyin seeks to expand the discourse on pluralism from a mere matter of social relations to more fundamental questions within Islamic studies: how the Islamic intellectual tradition comprehends diversity, how theological boundaries regarding “the Other” are constructed, and how such thought can be re-examined within the context of contemporary pluralistic societies.
