Abstract

Online gaming addiction among Generation Z is not solely a matter of technology or digital entertainment; the issue encompasses a loss of control, excessive consumption of time and attention, an imbalance of activities, and impairments to rational faculties and self-regulation. While literature on problematic gaming has expanded significantly across the fields of psychology, health, education, and technology, the application of the concept of ḥifẓ al-ʻaql (preservation of the intellect)—through a maqāṣidī (purposive) exegesis of Surah al-Mā’idah [5]:87 and al-Qaṣaṣ [28]:77—requires further development. This study aims to analyze the construction of ḥifẓ al-ʻaql within these two verses, the relationship between online gaming addiction and the principle of preserving the intellect, the boundaries of online gaming usage, and the role of ḥifẓ al-ʻaql as a framework for managing addiction among Generation Z. A qualitative, library-based research approach is employed, utilizing maqāṣidī exegesis for analysis; primary sources include the Qur’an, alongside literature on exegesis (tafsīr), maqāṣid al-sharīʻah (objectives of Islamic law), and contemporary studies on problematic gaming and Generation Z. The analysis reveals that Surah al-Mā’idah [5]:87, through the principle of lā taʻtadū (do not transgress), emphasizes restraint and prohibits exceeding limits, while Surah al-Qaṣaṣ [28]:77 underscores the balance between an orientation toward the Hereafter and worldly needs. Together, these verses establish a foundation for ḥifẓ al-ʻaql characterized by self-control, proportionality, balance, a focus on public interest (maṣlaḥah), and the prevention of harm (mafsadah). Addiction arises when gaming displaces priorities; interferes with education, work, social relationships, acts of worship, or responsibilities; and places the urge to play above rational judgment. Online gaming is acceptable as a form of proportionate recreation, provided that boundaries are respected and the wellbeing of the individual is upheld. These findings extend the application of maqāṣidī interpretation to self-regulation within the digital ecosystem and offer a framework for addiction control based on limits, balance, priorities, and public interest.
